APD Seeks Driver After East Cesar Chavez Hit-and-Run

Austin police detectives are asking for the public’s help tracking down a pickup driver who took off after rear-ending another vehicle on Monday, Jan. 16, 2026. The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of E. Cesar Chavez Street and Attayac Street. The other driver suffered minor injuries and did not need to be taken to a hospital, according to police. Detectives say the suspect vehicle was a newer-model, dark blue or black pickup with LED headlights that left the scene without calling 9-1-1 or stopping to exchange information.

What Police Say

APD has assigned the case number 26-0161279 and is asking anyone who saw the collision, especially residents or drivers with dashcam or doorbell footage, to get in touch with investigators. In a post via the Austin Police Department, officials described the crash as a rear-end collision, with the pickup continuing westbound after the impact instead of stopping.
