‘Tired of hearing your voice’: Police say Bible talk triggered Austin bus stabbing suspect

A 54-year-old man accused of stabbing two people aboard a Capital Metro bus last week allegedly attacked the victims after becoming upset that they were discussing the Bible, according to an arrest affidavit obtained Wednesday by the American-Statesman.

Austin police arrested Rogerio Martinez on Friday on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He allegedly stabbed one passenger in the back with a kitchen knife, critically wounding him, before turning the weapon on another passenger who attempted to intervene, according to the affidavit. Officers and medics responded shortly after 1:30 p.m. Friday to a reported stabbing in the 2000 block of South Lamar Boulevard, where callers told dispatchers a man was attacking people aboard a No. 3 bus.

According to the affidavit, the first officer on scene found two injured individuals lying on the ground while bystanders said the suspect remained on the bus. The officer then located a man, later identified as Martinez, still on the bus with blood on his hands and clothing, the document states…
