North Austin Bar Shooting Leaves One Dead, Suspect Charged

A late-night fight outside a North Austin bar turned deadly when gunfire erupted in the parking lot, leaving one man dead and another seriously wounded after a security guard returned fire, according to police. The shooting unfolded outside Michelobos Sports Bar at 900 E. Braker Lane in the early morning hours of Nov. 1, 2024. The man killed was identified as 30-year-old Tyler Cochran, and police say 20-year-old Clayton Taitague survived and is now accused of the killing.

Detectives say surveillance video shows the argument spiraling into violence and the suspect pulling a gun. According to CBS Austin, Homicide Detective Bradley Parks told reporters the footage captured Taitague firing nine shots at Cochran, after which a Michelobos security guard fired roughly a dozen rounds at Taitague. Parks said Taitague remains hospitalized and faces a first-degree murder charge.

Officers were sent to the scene shortly after 1:40 a.m. on what dispatch labeled a “shoot/stab hotshot” call, and first responders pronounced Cochran dead in the parking lot while Taitague was transported to a hospital, according to FOX 7 Austin.
