Texas Barbecue Franchise Smokey Mo’s Leverages Multi-Unit Deals to Grow

As a brand looking to scale, Texas-based Smokey Mo’s BBQ is seeking development in new markets. Its latest deal, however, a four-unit agreement, is in its backyard of Austin with a pair of experienced entrepreneurs.

Founded in 2000, the concept started franchising in 2007, but only in recent years after it was acquired by new owners has it ramped up development through multi-unit agreements. For its prospective franchisees, CEO Craig Haley said the brand is mainly on the lookout for those with a background in the food and service space.

That’s not the case with its latest franchisees, Cody Cox and his dad, Stephen. But while the two aren’t restaurateurs or barbecue pit masters, they bring extensive experience in the business space. A graduate of the University of Texas’ business school, Cox worked in commercial real estate at Virtus Real Estate Capital and Lionstone Investments before joining his father’s company as vice president of operations…
