Tax Day is April 15, here’s what you need to know

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The deadline to file your income taxes for 2026 is just a few days away on April 15. If you haven’t filed your taxes just yet, here’s everything you should know to help make the process go smoothly.

It’s important to note that Texas has no state income tax, meaning that April 15 is a federal requirement, not a state one, to file your taxes.

The One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act and its impacts on this tax season

On July 4, 2025, President Donald Trump signed the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act into law, which included new tax deductions for the 2026 filing season.

The Internal Revenue Service said these include:

  • Seniors age 65 and older may be eligible to claim an additional $6,000 deduction.
  • Tipped workers may be eligible to deduct up to $25,000 for qualified tips.
  • Individuals may be eligible to deduct up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for qualified overtime.
  • Individuals may deduct up to $10,000 in qualified passenger vehicle loan interest.

What to have on hand when filing your taxes

To avoid having to make an amended return, it’s important to make sure you have all the documents on hand before filing, such as:

  • Your social security number or individual tax ID number.
  • Bank account and routing number so that you can deposit your refund if you receive one or pay your taxes.
  • Your adjusted gross income and the exact refund amount from last year’s tax return.
  • W-2 form, or a corrected W-2 that shows wages from your employers.
