Nearly $90M needed for these aging, dilapidated bridges in Austin

Nearly three dozen bridges in Texas’ capital city are classified as in need of repair or total replacement, with tens of millions in maintenance costs estimated to care for the aging infrastructure.

The Austin Transportation and Public Works Department issued a city memo last week outlining the current statuses of the 466 major bridges, 810 small culverts, and 20 pedestrian and bike bridges in the city’s purview. The vast majority of those are classified as having satisfactory or higher ratings; however, the 2026 bridge status report highlighted 35 bridges overall in need of near-term rehabilitation or total replacement: nine major bridges, 18 small bridges and culverts, and eight pedestrian- and bike-centric bridges.

City officials noted the sticker price behind those 35 repairs runs to the tune of approximately $89.5 million across the next five years, based on current cost estimates. On top of that, a nearly $90 million investment in upgrades, the memo stressed that an annual investment of roughly $30 million will be required post-construction to maintain the quality and integrity of those bridges…
