New inclusive cafe opens in the Mueller area, providing jobs to individuals with Down syndrome

AUSTIN (KXAN)– A coffee shop in north Austin is focusing on inclusive employment as it reopens its doors, offering both a fresh start and new opportunities for people with Down syndrome.

Empowered Coffee was the original name of this cafe; the business closed back in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, on Mother’s Day, the cafe celebrated its grand re-opening this time with a new name, ‘Empowered Cafe.’

The grand re-opening was celebrated at the cafe’s new location in the Mueller community, drawing crowds of customers eager to support its mission and enjoy a cup of joe. The cafe’s mission is to specifically hire individuals with Down syndrome, creating a welcoming space for both employees and the broader community.

The cafe is a reboot of a similar concept that previously operated in Austin but closed in less than a year due to rising rent costs. This time around, the business is getting additional support.
