Texas Governor Greg Abbott is now expanding the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Repeat Offender Task Force to North Texas. The goal is to prevent high-threat offenders from returning to Texas streets.
Hundreds of Repeat Offenders Already Arrested
According to NBCDFW, the areas specifically identified for the initiative include Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin. Abbott wrote a letter to DPS Colonel Freeman Martin discussing how the initiative began in Houston last October and has resulted in 728 arrests of repeat offenders including 455 high-threat criminals and gang members.
Abbott said that DPS has seized more than 225,000 lethal doses of fentanyl, 415 pounds of marijuana and 110 weapons. Abbott’s letter comes as North Texas police departments continue dedicating resources to repeat violent offenders.
North Texas Agencies Join the Effort
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux announced that 162 arrests took place last Wednesday in the latest operation targeting fugitives, specifically targeting those wanted for violent physical assaults.
Since Comeaux became chief one year ago, the partnership with the U.S. Marshals for the Northern District of Texas has resulted in more than 1,300 arrests.
