Independence stuns Bakersfield, Monache’s Baxter runs wild in Week 5

A bye-heavy Week 5 still produced one of the CIF Central Section season’s biggest upsets and several notable individual performances.

Independence built a 19-point halftime lead and knocked off previously unbeaten Bakersfield. Santa Ynez ended a four-game skid with a six-point road win, while Monache running back Cooper Baxter needed only 13 carries to approach 300 rushing yards.

Independence knocks off Bakersfield, 19-7

Independence scored all 19 of its points during the first half and relied on its defense to finish a major road upset at Griffith Field.

The Falcons scored six points in the opening quarter and 13 in the second to take a 19-0 halftime lead. Bakersfield answered with a touchdown during the third quarter, but Independence shut out the Drillers over the final period to secure the 19-7 victory. 09/25/2026…
