BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Renovation plans for east Belle Terrence Park have caused lots of joy, but for one woman it caused worry.
50 years ago, programs like Police Activities League and Sheriff’s Activities League didn’t exist for younger generations to stay out of trouble. However, there was a local activist named Vida Lee Scott: a good Samaritan making sure that children in the area were fed and taken care of after school.
After she passed away in 1974, a park building was named in her honor. With renovations coming to the park, her daughter wants to make sure her mother’s legacy is preserved.

“It was safe. It was a safe environment for the children in the community,” Beverly Scott, the daughter of Vida Lee Scott said.
The building sat unused, until a few years ago when the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation offered its nonprofit services out of the building.
Services offered to adults was not the original intention from Vida Lee Scott.
