Volunteers begin count of Kern County’s homeless population for annual ‘Point in Time’ report

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — More than 400 volunteers headed out Wednesday to conduct this year’s Point in Time Count of homelessness throughout Kern County.

It may be the beginning of the year, but Executive Director of the Bakersfield-Kern Regional Homeless Collaborative , Rick Ramos, shares that it helps address the crisis.

“Even though it’s just a snapshot in time it can be very representative of the years’ worth of what we’re seeing in our data as well,” said Ramos.

According to last year’s Point in Time report , the count found 1,948 people were homeless in the county. Of those individuals, 931 or 48% were sheltered, and 1,017 or 51% were unsheltered.

According to the Mission’s Carlos Baldovinos, most of those individuals are local.

“A lot of them say they are from Kern County. Could it be that they relocated to Kern County seven years ago? 10 years ago? Five years ago? Three years ago? But they’re still here, they’re in Kern County,” said Baldovinos.
