Snowiversary: Bakersfield’s rare snow day happened 25 years ago

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Do you remember where you were 25 years ago? Many in Bakersfield still do as one of their most memorable days when around 6 inches of snow fell in the city.

If you’re reading this in 2024, it’s a good indication that you remember the buzz, the excitement, and the chill in the air too.

The rare snowfall caused school closures with some kids then spending the day building snowmen.

Even as California and Kern County have seen its fair share of snow and rain since then, it is unlikely that a major snowfall of around 6 inches happens in the city of Bakersfield. 17 News Meteorologist says the right conditions must exist for it to happen: establishment of cold air followed closely by precipitation.
