Wednesday’s strong winds blew into the record books

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Strong winds that swept throughout Kern County Wednesday evening set a new record for Bakersfield for the month of January.

The strongest wind gusts were recorded topping out at 52 mph at 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday, 17’s News Chief Forecaster Kevin Charette said. The previous record was set on Jan. 7, 2005 when gusts topped 49 mph in Bakersfield.

Weather Wednesday: Groundhog Day

The winds were strong enough to toss around items not tied down or secured including tumbleweeds. Some neighborhoods saw lots of tumbleweed blocking roads or making it difficult to pass through.

The bulk of Thursday’s storm will drop most of its precipitation in the morning into the evening, with residual showers through Friday morning.

Valley locations may receive as much as a half-inch of rain or more from Thursday morning to 4 a.m. Friday. Mountain areas in Kern have a 55% chance of receiving 1.5 inches of rain or more in the same period.
