River, creek flooding possible across Central California; 8 feet of snow could fall in mountains

Central California is currently in the throes of a powerful storm system, unleashing copious moisture and fierce winds across the region, with the National Weather Service Hanford office closely monitoring the evolving situation.

The impact of this storm has been particularly pronounced in Kern County and the Coastal Range, where powerful wind gusts have already been recorded. In the mountainous areas of Kern County, numerous locations have experienced wind gusts ranging from 70 to 90 mph, with isolated readings reaching as high as 90 mph. The strong gradient ahead of the approaching cold front is expected to maintain these intense wind speeds throughout the day.

Although Bakersfield is currently in a rain shadow due to the prevailing strong winds, substantial precipitation is anticipated as the cold front advances southward overnight. Along the frontal system, heavier precipitation is expected, elevating the risk of flooding across the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills below the snowline.
