City of Wasco nears reestablishment of its own police force

WASCO, Calif. (KGET) — The City of Wasco is closer than ever to relaunching its police department after over a year of preparations. The new police force is one the city has not seen for decades.

“We’ve had a contract with the Kern County Sheriff’s [Office] for over 40 years to provide police services here in Wasco,” said Wasco City Manager Scott Hurlbert. “So, an entire generation or two have been without that.”

The first year of preparations has cost between $4 to $6 million. One key factor in this decision is the trending shortage in law enforcement.

“There have been shortages of recruits and folks that don’t want to get into law enforcement anymore, so there have been a general shortage, not just in Kern County, but California and nationwide,” Hurlbert said. “The sheriff’s [office’s] ability to fully staff the Wasco station has been difficult.”

Having local law enforcement will build more trust between community members and peace officers.
