‘You can just be you’: Black-owned beauty businesses becoming therapeutic safe spaces

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Finding a safe space can be difficult, but historically Black hair salons and barbershops have been known to provide that space.

Here at home, one Black-owned business shares it is paving the way to create that sense of safety for all who walk through their doors and sit in their chairs.

“You can just come in here, nobody expects anything from you, you can just be you,” said Deedi Stuart.

Stuart is the owner of Flawless Cutz and Stylez , and said her barber shop and hair salon remains in business because it creates a safe atmosphere her clients can’t find just anywhere.

“You come in, you sit down and you want to talk to somebody, and a lot of times, that somebody is your hairstylist,” said Stuart. “So, your kind of getting a lightweight therapy session while you’re getting beautified, so you get stuff off of your chest, and you can go ahead and start your day and feel good because you look good.”

Between the haircuts, the laughs and the many hairstyles, Stuart said she gets the chance to be there for clients when they are having hard times.
