BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The effort continues to alleviate Kern County’s dog crisis as another low-cost spay and neuter clinic was held in east Bakersfield on Thursday.
The clinic took place at Heritage Park. Strength of Shadow Dog Rescue, Unity K9 Express Rescue and Outreach, the Kern Safe Animal Coalition, and the Spay Neuter Imperative Project, or “SNIP,” all came together for the event, which was held between 7:15 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Organizers told 17 News more than two dozen procedures were performed on Thursday.

“I think the extra work that we’re doing to get the animals to the appointments and to help the owners access these kinds of services is definitely working,” said Dawn Romero, with Unity K9 Express. “It’s really important because about 80% of the shelter intake, and probably also the majority of the dogs that are dumped in the fields or around Bakersfield, come from this area.”
