Case dismissed after standoff suspect found incompetent

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The case against a man who was accused of shooting a dog and pointing a gun at a sheriff’s deputy has been dismissed after it was determined he’s not competent to stand trial, and can never be restored to competency.

Prosecutors say there are no plans to refile charges against George Fischer following a report Wednesday on his competency. Fischer is prohibited from owning, possessing or purchasing any guns, District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Daniela Gonzaga said.

Deputies took Fischer into custody on June 12 after a 30-minute standoff on Belle Terrace, just east of Wible Road, according to a court document. Multiple guns and materials used for making pipe bombs were found in the home, the document said.

Fischer was 75 at the time of his arrest.

The dog, a pointer mix, was shot in the shoulder and survived.

According to the document, a deputy called to Fischer’s home to perform a welfare check encountered him in the living room and retreated when Fischer pointed a gun at him. More deputies arrived and a physical altercation ended with Fischer’s arrest.
