Anthony Davis, KCSOS’s Chief Technology Officer, and his wife, Ali, are observing Safe Surrender Month. Ten years ago, they adopted their son, Nathan, who was surrendered at birth. Nathan was born 23 weeks premature, weighing only 1.4 pounds. The Davis family supports the Safe Surrender law, which permits parents to surrender newborns at designated locations in Bakersfield and Kern County within three days of birth. Since 2006, when the law became permanent, 98 newborns have been surrendered in Kern County.

Lito Morillo, KCDHS Director, underscored the significance of the Safe Surrender program. He stated it offers a confidential and safe option for parents unable to care for their newborns.

The Davis family, already foster parents to three children, adopted Nathan after being informed he needed a family. Nathan’s first four weeks were spent in the hospital due to his premature birth, with his adoptive parents visiting him regularly.

At a press conference, Ali Davis expressed her appreciation for the Safe Surrender program. She described Nathan as a healthy 10-year-old who enjoys various activities.
