Mt. Vernon Elementary holds first ‘Walking School Bus’ event

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — On National Walking Day, one Bakersfield school used the day to help students get to school safely and on time.

Mt. Vernon Elementary School launched the first “Walking School Bus” event April 3, with volunteers walking several routes to pick up students.

It’s an effort to reduce chronic absenteeism down to 11.2%. Organizers say the event ended with a celebration at the school.

The event also served as a way to make a positive academic impact and cultivate community engagement according to Vice Principal Gloria De Hoyos Tapia.
