Superintendent’s more than 30% pay increase is ‘slap in the face’ according to teachers

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Many are reacting to the news that Superintendent Ramon Hendrix has been given a more than 30% pay hike and 17 News spoke with those on both sides of issue.

“We were blindsided when this happened, and we’re upset,” said fourth grade teacher Tangie Piper. “It just doesn’t seem appropriate that our superintendent would give himself a $100,000 raise.”

Piper is just one of dozens of teachers who attended a Greenfield Union School District board meeting and want answers about Superintendent Ramon Hendrix’s newly approved salary increase.

“We feel like a 38% raise is kind of a slap in the face to our community,” said Piper.

But Superintendent Hendrix says teachers in the district are paid well too.

“Greenfield teachers are paid in a comparable manner to other large districts in Bakersfield, including Bakersfield City and Panama Buena Vista school districts,” he said. “We feel like we’re very competitive and we pay our teachers very well.”
