Heavy law enforcement presence in neighborhood near Cottonwood and East Planz roads

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kern County sheriff’s deputies surrounded a home with a person barricaded inside in south Bakersfield Thursday afternoon.

On June 27, a person was transported to an area hospital after ending an hours long standoff with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to KCSO. A large law enforcement presence was in the area of Cottonwood and East Planz roads at around 5:30 p.m., on Thursday.

Sheriff’s deputies say they were serving a felony warrant in the 1900 block of East Planz Road when a male subject fired off multiple rounds inside a home, forcing an evacuation of the surrounding area. SWAT was called to the scene after deputies believed there was a possible hostage involved in the standoff.

Officials asked people to stay away from the area.

The sheriff’s office said MLK Community Center located at 1000 S. Owens St. would be open for people who were evacuated from the area of the ongoing incident.
