‘Princess Barbie’ admitted firing shots in deadly Mt. Vernon Avenue shooting

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — She only meant to scare, not kill.

That’s what Ashley Ruiz — nicknamed “Princess Barbie” — told sheriff’s investigators when questioned about a deadly shooting July 18 on Mt. Vernon Avenue.

She at first repeatedly denied firing a gun before coming clean, investigators say in recently released court documents.

“Okay, I’m being honest,” Ruiz told detectives. “I am, look, I did it, okay, point blank.”

Ruiz, 38, and co-defendants Rhys Casterline, 22, and Gabriel Valle, 24, are each charged with first-degree murder in the death of Robert Overdevest. He died three days after being shot in the eye.

Surveillance video captured the shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex between Quincy Street and Pacific Drive, according to the documents. It shows a tan Toyota Camry pull up behind Overdevest’s pickup.
