Havilah repopulation: Residents return to assess their properties

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Havilah residents began returning to their homes on Wednesday.

The Borel Fire destroyed much of the historic town of Havilah, the original county seat in Kern, in late July.

Folks who live in Havilah started returning to make property assessments Wednesday afternoon. But only residents are allowed into Havilah.

According to KCFD, residents will have to show identification to law enforcement at access points. A ReadyKern message will be sent when the repopulation effort begins.

Residents are warned not to go near or to clean up ash and debris as the airborne particles released could be inhaled, causing health issues.

Public Health representatives will provide help and information at two sites: Caliente Bodfish Road at Saddle Springs Road and Caliente Bodfish Road at Indian Oak Road.

Personnel will be there Thursday until 5 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
