Seniors paint parking lot spots at Garces Memorial High School

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Garces Memorial High School seniors gathered on Sunday with paint brushes and buckets to lighten up the school parking lot.

The event took place Aug. 10 – 11, from 8 a.m. to noon. The event was not short of school spirit, which is exactly what fuels three organizers who were painting Sunday.

“It’s really exciting, this is the first year we’re ever doing this and I think we’re the first school in Bakersfield to do this,” said senior London Shoffner.

5.2 magnitude earthquake felt throughout Bakersfield area

Organizers say 115 students participated in the parking lot paint project.

“We kind of just wanted to build school spirit and we also wanted to do more things for our seniors,” said senior Jilliana Borba. “Usually they just use chalk, but this year we wanted to take it to the next step.”

Students had to pay a $25 application fee plus, pay for supplies.

“It means a lot. You feel like you’re contributing to the school and to our class,” said Caitlin Asaro, a senior at Garces. “Just getting to start a new tradition is a cool feeling to have.”
