‘It’s devastating’: Bakersfield ladies and babies boutique victim of theft once again, will soon close shop

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Baby Me and Simply Me boutique on Calloway Drive in Bakersfield was once again targeted by thieves. But the owner and a customer — who knows her way around the internet — may have solved the crime themselves.

“It’s devastating because there’s no magic tree somewhere that helps pay the bills,” said owner Ryan Goldberg.

On Friday, Aug. 9, Goldberg greeted customers as usual, including two women, who minutes later stole nearly $800 worth of merchandise.

Goldberg said they were in the shop for about 14 minutes or so.

“Periodically, I would just holler ‘How you doing?’ They were kind of going back and forth saying ‘Oh, look at this, look at that,’” Goldberg recalled.

Goldberg said the customers then headed out one by one, but one was carrying a brown tote bag that read “MAMA.”

“And she was beelining it for the door. And my brain thought a million things … no way this is not happening, are you kidding me,” Goldberg said, adding that she then chased after the suspects.
