CHP will be out in force over Labor Day weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The California Highway Patrol will be out in force over the Labor Day weekend — one of the busiest travel times of the year.

“Everyone’s safety is our top priority, so make responsible choices,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said in a release. “Drive sober, stay focused and help keep our roads safe for all who use them.”

The CHP’s statewide maximum enforcement period will begin Friday evening and last through Monday. All available officers will be on patrol.

Over last year’s Labor Day weekend, 38 people died in crashes statewide, according to the release. Almost half of those killed weren’t wearing a seat belt.

CHP officers arrested 1,064 people on suspicion of driving under the influence during last year’s holiday period, the release says.

If drinking, designate a sober driver or use public transit or a ride-hailing service. Anyone who sees a suspected drunken driver is asked to call 911 and provide the license plate number, location and direction of travel.
