Former downtown pet shop, future co-working facility gutted by fire Monday afternoon

A single-story building in downtown Bakersfield was gutted by a powerful, three-alarm fire Monday afternoon. The Toucan Building on the northeast corner of 19th and N streets, which is still remembered by some for its beautiful beamed interior ceiling, suffered serious damage, even as city and county firefighters fought at ground level, on the rooftops and from aerial vantage points perched atop 115-foot ladder truck ladders.
