New state law could allow sale and consumption of alcohol at BC’s Memorial Stadium

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — At California’s public schools, it’s typically illegal to sell or consume alcoholic beverages.

But Congressman and former Assemblyman Vince Fong co-introduced a bill earlier this year that would permit the sale and consumption of alcohol at the Bakersfield College Memorial Stadium.

That proposal is now on the Governor’s desk and is just a signature away from becoming state law.

With the governor’s signature, game-watching for Bakersfield College may change forever.

But BC students are sharing mixed reactions.

“It just depends on how they implement it,” said sophomore Elisa Soto.

Soto was one of many to voice concerns on the safety repercussions of increased alcohol presence.

On the other hand: “I’m all for it,” said sophomore Jinkx Martinez, noting that those who want to act “violent” will act violent with or without alcohol.

Martinez added, “If people aren’t going to go for the game, they’re going to go for the drinks.”
