Stockdale HS is ‘Going Gold’ for childhood cancer awareness

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and some Bakersfield boys are making touchdowns in more ways than one.

Stockdale High School is going for the gold and raising donations that will go to Bags of Love.

Childhood Cancer Awareness month is very important to them as it’s a diagnosis that hits home. Across the nation, many are sporting yellow ribbons to raise awareness for childhood cancer.

That awareness garners funding for research and treatments alike. In Bakersfield many are advocating for change. Stockdale High School is too, making signs and getting ready to sport yellow for Friday night’s game.

They’re doing this in support of Bags of Love — a nonprofit in support of childhood cancer survivors.

For Brayden Rhodes, this movement hits home as he lost his sister to leukemia in 2019. Brayden gets through the grief by thinking of all of the fun times they had.

“My favorite memory that I had with her was when she had leukemia she threatened to hit me with the frying pan every single time I’d get on her nerves,” he said.
