‘El Grito’: Mexican Independence Day street fair takes over downtown Bakersfield Sept. 15

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce invites the community celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day at the 13th annual “El Grito” celebration Sept. 15.

“El Grito De Dolores” is Mexico’s cry of independence from Spain, which originally took place in 1810. Sunday also kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month.

Celebration of life set for ‘Dancing Cowboy’ Sept. 14 on Stockdale Highway

Sunday’s street fair will feature folklorico dancing, mariachi bands, drink vendors and of course, tacos. The fiesta will also feature a live stream of “El Grito De Dolores” celebration live from Mexico City.

One of the highlights of the event not only celebrates Mexican Independence Day, but the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will also be awarding 50 scholarships to students in high school and college freshmen, according to KCHCC CEO Jay Tamsi.

The party will take place at the Liberty Bell at Truxtun and Chester avenues in downtown Bakersfield and is free to attend. A livestream of the event will also be available on KGET.com beginning at 9 p.m.
