Bakersfield man turns a trade learned while incarcerated into a talent to help others

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A trade developed in prison became a new path of redemption for a Bakersfield man. Now, that trade is putting smiles on the faces of dozens of children throughout Kern.

While some kids are at recess, other kids are getting haircuts. That is thanks to Bryan Harris, known as Bryan the Barber, a 62-year-old barber shop owner and haircut connoisseur who provides free haircuts for elementary school students.

“I’m doing this entirely from my heart, I don’t care about money or anything like that I just want to change as many lives as I can through haircuts,” said Harris.

Between every taper or fade, each child leaves with a smile and ready to take on the day.

“I feel like kids will not call me names now,” said student Justin Skinner after his haircut.

“They were calling you names before?” asked 17’s Mikhala Armstrong. Skinner replied, “Yeah.”

17’s Mikhala Armstrong asked Skinner,”Do you feel you got your confidence back?” Skinner shook his head yes.
