Trailers catch fire at Viewfinders Grand Prix camp area Saturday night

A Kern County Fire Department firefighter is seen spraying water onto a trailer burning in the Viewfinders Grand Prix camping area south of the Desert Empire Fairgrounds on Saturday night. The fire was reported at 6:48 p.m. with propane tanks also exploding. Wind-driven flames engulfed at least three trailers and trucks before firefighters could begin dousing the fire. According to a Ridgecrest Police Department release, there was one minor injury reported. The dirt lot, at the corner of Richmond and Bowman roads, is usually empty but was full of travel trailers and toy haulers in town for the annual off-road motorcycle race. The Viewfinders Club will host Sunday’s race as scheduled.
