Kason Guyton Trial: Oct. 1

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The trial of Jonathan Knight, accused of killing 5-year-old Kason Guyton during a car-to-car shooting in 2017, resumed Tuesday.

17 News will live blog the proceedings.

Last week, attorneys presented opening statements.

Prosecutor Eric Smith said the shooting stemmed from an altercation between rival gangs hours earlier.

He said Knight fired at a car driven by a rival gang member. The gunfire struck two children in the vehicle: Kason Guyton and Guyton’s brother, then 7.

Kason died, his brother survived.

Timothy Hennessy, Knight’s attorney, said co-defendant Jeremy King, who has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, is trying to pin the blame on his client in exchange for a deal in which he’ll be sentenced to time served.

King drove the vehicle from which the shots were fired.
