Veterans gather for weekly breakfast at Zingo’s Cafe

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — An iconic Bakersfield cafe is giving Kern County veterans a chance to get together and possibly make some new friends along the way.

The new owners of Zingo’s Cafe are hosting a weekly event meant to lift the spirits of those heroes.

The weekly Wednesday veteran’s breakfasts started at Zingo’s Cafe back in April.

It began as a modest affair but has taken off as word got out, with Wednesday’s crowd coming fresh from Kern County’s 50th Honor Flight.

Organizers tell us it’s really all about fostering connection.

“A lot of the veterans are alone. They may not have a significant other or have anyone here locally, so we feel like it’s important to keep them bonded with other veterans,” Arlene Aninion a volunteer said. “They share their stories, they share their lives–and they go places together. And it’s been a godsend for them. They so look forward to doing this.”

You don’t have to be a veteran to enjoy these breakfasts.

“For me–they’ve become like family. They are family now,” Michael Meier, Zingo’s Cafe owner said.
