Reports detail killing allegedly committed by teens, 18 and 13

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — They picked a fight with a guy they came across in southeast Bakersfield. He surprised them with how well he defended himself, using a tree branch to hold them at bay.

Lance Burnett, 18, got fed up. He told Dylan Fermin Flores, 13, to keep an eye on the man while he went home, according to newly-released police reports. Flores, armed with a knife, agreed.

Soon after, Burnett returned with a gun.

The man tried to run, but they chased him and Burnett fired several times, killing him, Flores told police.

Both he and Burnett are charged with murder in the shooting, which occurred last month in a large field southwest of South Washington Street and East Belle Terrace.

As of Friday, the victim’s name has not been released.

Flores’ case is being heard in juvenile court — because he’s under 16, he can’t be transferred to adult court. If convicted as charged, Burnett faces a life term in prison. Flores, if convicted, could be kept in a youth facility until he turns 25.
