6-year-old Bakersfield girl uses hot cocoa to help kids in need

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — As the weather dies down for the season, some lemonade stands start to pack up. Others convert to hot cocoa stands.

One stand in particular doesn’t accept quarters. It’s accepting toys.

When Jennifer Cemo asked her 6-year-old daughter, Avery, what she wanted for Christmas, she expected dolls or a playhouse. Instead, Avery said she wanted to help kids in need.

“She has a very kind heart,” said Avery’s mom, Jennifer Cemo.

It all started with a Starbucks run. Little Avery saw a box with the “Toys for Tots” label, and asked her mother what it was.

“I explained what Toys for Tots is about, and she got a little sad and said, ‘So some kids don’t get gifts’. I said ‘No,’ so she wanted to start raising gifts for kids,” said Jennifer.

“I want to help kids that don’t have toys for Christmas,” said Avery.

And so, Avery’s Hot Cocoa Stand was born.

“Chocolate chip cookie, or a sugar cookie,” asked Avery.

It’s even attracted the big man from up north, but no cash or cards are accepted here, and your pocket change won’t do either.
