Third-strike offender facing life in prison following multiple convictions in Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, California ( MyCaliforniaNews ) — A Kern County jury has convicted a man on multiple charges, potentially leading to a life sentence under California’s three-strikes law. The charges include assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, and attempted vehicle theft.The case against the defendant, whose name was not provided in the press release, was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Samuel Birchfield. The incident occurred on July 1, 2024, when the defendant attacked a victim who confronted him for tampering with a neighbor’s rental vehicle. The altercation escalated, resulting in the victim being injured and the defendant attempting to steal the victim’s vehicle. The victim and another neighbor managed to subdue the defendant until deputies arrived.The defendant resisted arrest by flailing his arms and not complying with commands, and later spat in the backseat of the patrol vehicle, according to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.
