Remembering CHP officer Gerald E. Dormaier, who died Christmas Day 44 years go

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Christmas Day marks the 44th anniversary of CHP officer Gerald E. Dormaier’s end of watch.

Dormaier and his partner, Officer Jerry M. Bean, were working Christmas Day on a foggy stretch of Highway 99, south of Bakersfield, when they arrived at the scene of an overturned propane truck.

He was standing on the center divider when he was tragically hit by a truck coming out of the fog at a high rate of speed. The 42-year-old died at the scene.

A 14-year CHP veteran had served in Anaheim, Tejon, Trukee, Buellton and Bakersfield Areas.
