BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified a 23-year-old passenger killed in an alcohol suspected crash on Ming Avenue on New Year’s Day.
The passenger was identified as Deonte John Brown, 23, of Bakersfield. The crash was reported in the area of Ming Avenue and Westholme Boulevard around 1:10 a.m.
According to police there were four people in the vehicle, two men and two women. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene and the remaining occupants were taken to the hospital.

According to a court filing, the driver of the car said a passenger in the vehicle grabbed the wheel causing them to lose control. The case is being sent to the District Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
The driver told police a passenger “grabbed the steering wheel from the rear of the vehicle,” according to a warrant filed in Superior Court.
The identities of the driver and passenger who allegedly grabbed the steering wheel have not been released.
