Millions to Benefit from Social Security Fairness Act With Higher Payments Sooner Than Expected

LOS ANGELES – Millions of retired teachers, police officers, and firefighters—including many in California—will see higher Social Security payments sooner than expected, federal officials announced Tuesday.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirmed it has begun issuing retroactive payments immediately and will boost monthly benefits starting in April. The changes affect more than 3.2 million people nationwide, following a law signed in January by former President Biden. The SSA estimates an average increase of $360 per month for over 2.5 million recipients.

The Social Security Fairness Act, decades in the making, eliminates federal policies that previously limited benefits for public pension holders and their surviving family members. Individual payment increases will vary, with some retirees gaining over $1,000 per month.
