Major change coming to California’s toll bridges in next few years: collection booths to be removed

RICHMOND, CA — Starting at the end of May, the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge will be the first of seven Bay Area bridges to remove its toll booths, officials with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) announced. The move is part of a regional push to transition to open-road tolling, which eliminates bottlenecks and speeds up traffic flow.

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge will see new gantries installed overhead to collect tolls without requiring drivers to stop. MTC plans for completion by early 2026, with other bridges, such as the Antioch and Carquinez, set to follow by 2027. Open-road tolling is expected to enhance traffic flow and reduce emissions.
