Man arrested for alleged DUI after crashing into canyon wall, seriously injuring passenger

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A solo vehicle crash on Highway 178 early Wednesday morning that seriously injured a passenger led to the arrest of a Bakersfield man on suspicion of driving under the influence.

At around 2:38 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash east of the mouth of the canyon. They arrived and found the driver of a 2005 Toyota Camry had veered off the road and collided with the canyon wall.

The driver, later identified as Luis Eduardo Costelo, and a man in the passenger seat were taken to Kern Medical. The passenger sustained major injuries, while Costelo suffered minor to moderate injuries…
