Bakersfield Man Pleads Guilty to Drug Trafficking Charges, Faces Mandatory Minimum 10-Year Sentence

Ramon Maldonado Jr., a 33-year-old from Bakersfield, pleaded guilty to charges of intent to distribute fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, psilocybin, and marijuana. This plea is part of ongoing efforts by federal authorities to address the spread of illicit drugs, particularly the rise in opioid-related deaths due to fentanyl, in Central California, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On August 10, 2023, federal law enforcement executed a search warrant at a Bakersfield residence linked to Maldonado, which was being used to distribute psychedelic drugs and marijuana. During the search, agents found 5.5 pounds of fentanyl, over 25 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, nearly 23 and a half pounds of marijuana, and smaller amounts of heroin and methamphetamine. They also discovered a stolen firearm and other contraband, with Maldonado found in a room surrounded by the drugs and firearm. “This case is the product of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith.
