Angelica Fuentes lost 60% of her vision after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2019 that could be managed through radiation, but not removed. Then an administrative assistant in an importing business, Fuentes found it impossible to work in front of a computer. The screen looked “all a jumble,” she said.
After undergoing treatment, Fuentes said she was able to secure Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, for her disability, as well as health benefits through MediCal. But she worries that one of her critical safety nets — payments of $220 a month for groceries through CalFresh — may be severely restricted or eliminated if proposed Congressional budget cuts go through.
Fuentes said she receives $1,400 a month through SSI, and $900 of that goes to rent one room in a house in El Monte. The remaining $200 goes to other bills. Without CalFresh, said, “I don’t have enough money left over for groceries.”…
