Vehicle plunges off Highway 58, two rescued by Kern County Firefighters

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — In the early hours of Wednesday, April 30, a vehicle veered off Highway 58, just east of the San Luis Obispo and Kern County line, plunging approximately 50-60 feet down an embankment and landing on its roof. The Kern County Fire Department’s Emergency Communications Center received the distress call at around 12:30 a.m.

A fire engine from McKittrick was the first to arrive at the scene. A firefighter from the crew used a Quick Deployment Rope Bag to safely descend to the overturned vehicle, where two occupants were found with minor to moderate injuries.

As additional resources and personnel arrived, a rescue plan was executed. A rope system and rescue basket were deployed to lift one of the injured individuals up the embankment to an awaiting ambulance. The second occupant managed to hike up with assistance from fire personnel…
