Dubai chocolate craze spawns a new dessert treat: Pistachio-strawberry cup, which in turn has nut’s wholesale price on the upswing

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – The latest food craze sweeping the country is an offspring of the Dubai chocolate bar, the pistachio paste-filled candy that took off when a Dubai chef’s wife posted a video about her sweet invention on TikTok in 2021.

The candy – made with chocolate, pistachio and kunafa (a shredded, sweet and crunchy Middle Eastern pastry dough) – is such a hit these days that some stores have started rationing them to customers; the limit is typically two bars per person.

It’s such a huge smash, it caused supply shortages that prompted the wholesale price of pistachios to jump from $7.65 to $10.30 per pound in just one year. That’s good news for Kern County tree nut growers…
