Bakersfield businesses urge shoppers to beat the heat and support local stores

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — (KBAK/FOX58) As temperatures rise in Bakersfield, local businesses are encouraging residents to shop locally to not only escape the heat but also find affordable deals amid a challenging economy.

Tom Zarate, store manager at Mill Creek Antique Mall, emphasized the appeal of older goods. “Something gets lost in translation with like the newer stuff, the more modern stuff. They just want to go back to simpler times,” said Zarate. He noted that antiquing and thrifting might be more affordable than buying new items, especially as tariffs make online shopping from big retailers more expensive.
