Condemned inmate dies after attack at Kern Valley State Prison

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man who was sentenced to death for murdering two teens more than 20 years ago was killed in an attack Friday at Kern Valley State Prison, according to prison officials.

Julian Mendez, 46, died after being assaulted by inmate Mario Renteria, 36, according to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. A makeshift weapon was found at the scene.

Renteria attacked Mendez around 10:30 a.m. and ignored commands to stop, according to CDCR. Staff used chemical agents — which initially stopped the assault — then more than 30 other inmates rushed in and started hitting Renteria, officials said…
