Los Angeles woman sentenced for bear spray incident and high-speed chase in Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — A 24-year-old Los Angeles woman has been sentenced to one year and four months in prison after a bizarre incident involving bear spray in Bakersfield and a high-speed police chase ending in Delano, according to Kern County Superior Court records.

On June 3, 2025, just after 11:30 a.m., Moenay Humphries was involved in a verbal altercation with employees at a store in the 800 block of Union Avenue, said Bakersfield police. During the dispute, Humphries discharged a large canister of bear spray into the store’s HVAC system, exposing multiple employees and customers to the chemical and contaminating the business.

Officers found Humphries in a nearby vehicle, but she fled the scene, leading police on a high-speed chase. The pursuit, which primarily traveled along Highway 58 and northbound Highway 99, saw speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. The California Highway Patrol eventually took over the chase, which concluded when Humphries was involved in a single-vehicle, non-injury crash near Avenue 24, just north of Delano.
